It is hardly “four-star entertainment.” But when seasoned and authoritative pageant director Mrs. Armstrong breaks her leg\, it is up to Beth’s inexperienced mother Grace to step in. The timing couldn’t be worse\, as the rambunctious Herdman children\, a rough and tough group of siblings\, descend upon the pageant\, lured by the promise of free dessert at Sunday school\, and determined to win all the lead roles for themselves. The Ladies’ Aid Society members are beside themselves with disapproval\, all the shepherds quit because Gladys Herdman “hits too hard”\, the show is briefly re-titled “Revenge at Bethlehem\,” and the church catches on fire. But Beth and her community watch in surprise as the same old Christmas story is rejuvenated by the creativity\, energy\, and unexpected sincerity of a misunderstood young family. \n  \nCharacters: \nCast size of 20 people\, 2nd grade and older. \n  \nMother (Grace Bradley)  (female) – age 35-45 attractive\, involved mom  \nFather (Bob Bradley) (male) – age 35-45 solid\, family man  \nBeth Bradley (female) – Age 10-11 the narrator\, strong voice and presence \nCharlie Bradley (male) – Age 8-9 traditional kid brother \nRalph Herdman (male) – Age 12-13 ragged\, scroungy\, slouching manner; touch of adolescent cool \nImogene Herdman (female) – Age 11-12 loud\, bossy\, crafty \nLeroy Herdman (male) – Age 10-11 tough\, sure of himself \nClaude Herdman (male) – Age 9-10 tough\, combative \nOllie Herdman (male) – Age 8-9 looking for trouble\, Claude’s usual partner in crime \nGladys Herdman (female) – Age 7-8 small\, wiry\, feisty  \nAlice Wendleken (female) – Age 10-11 prim\, proper\, pain in the neck  \nMrs. Armstrong (female) – Age 45-60 managerial in voice and manner  \nMrs. Slocum (female) – Age 35-60 pleasant\, motherly woman \nMrs. Clark (female) – Age 35-60 \nMrs. Clausing (female) – Age 35-60 \nMrs. McCarthy (female) – Age 40-55 a younger\, less imperial version of Mrs. Armstrong \nMaxine (female) – Age 10-11 \nElmer Hopkins (male) – Age 12-13 \nHobie (male) – Age 9-10 \nDavid (male) – Age 8-9 \nBeverly (female) – Age 7-8 \nShirley (female) – Age 5-6 \nJuanita (female) – Age 5-6 \nDoris (female) – Age 9-10 \nReverend Hopkins (male) – Age mid-40’s \n  \nActors will be asked to read from the scenes in the Audition Packet during the auditions. \n

SUMMARY:Auditions: Puffs\, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic
DESCRIPTION:Puffs is a tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This\, however\, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs … who just happened to be there too.  \nThis fast-paced\, clever play looks at a familiar adventure from a new perspective – of three potential heroes just trying to survive a rather dangerous school alongside a group of well-meaning\, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers. This hilariously heartfelt tale asks what it means to be a “side character” in an epic adventure.  \nAuditions for Puffs\, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic\, directed by Allyssa Hynes\, will be held as follows: \nDate & Times: \n\nThursday July 13th from 7pm – 9 pm\nTuesday July 18th  from 7pm to 9pm\nCall backs (if needed) will be Thursday July 27th from 7pm to 9pm\nIf unable to attend in person\, you can submit a video audition via YouTube and completed audition form to puffs@whatconj.org by July 18th\n\nLocation: 15 Frank E. Rodgers Blvd. South\, Harrison\, NJ (the former Holy Cross High School) \nProduction Dates: October 21st – Oct 29th \nAll actors 18+ of any background are invited to audition. \nThere is some adult language and magical battlefield violence within the show.  \nQuestions? Contact puffs@whatconj.org \nRehearsals \nRead Thru – Monday\, July 31st or August 10th @ 7 pm (TBD) \nRehearsals will be light in August and pick up after Labor Day. \nRehearsals will mostly take place on weekday evenings.  \nActors should have good availability the two weeks prior to the show (excluding Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day)\, Oct 10th through Oct 20th. \nPlease list all conflicts between July 31 and the shows.  \n  \nThe original production of PUFFS cast 11 actors who doubled 60+ different characters. The character descriptions below reflect the original casting\, but the director intends to be somewhat flexible with the cast breakdown. Please be honest on your audition form about the roles you would accept.  \nEach Puff must be energetic and sincere. All actors should have strong comedic timing.  \n\nCharacters: \n\nWayne Hopkins (male) – The hero. Totally uncool\, but full of charm and heart. Loyal to a tee. Likes comic books and video games\, knows nothing about magic or this weird magic world he is now a part of. Best friends with Oliver and Megan. \nOliver Rivers (male) – One of the main trio. Incredibly smart and cerebral\, he is a math wiz\, and proud of it; lovingly a nerd from New Jersey. After ending up at wizarding school\, he finds out he isn’t the top of his class\, and instead begins a fantastical journey of friendship and even some love\, better than any algebra class could ever promise. \nMegan Jones (female) – One of the main trio; begins the show goth by only desiring to live up to her mother’s reputation: a dark wizard currently in Wiz Priz for being such a bad-ass Death Buddy in her youth. Over time\, her tough veneer begins to soften\, as a budding romance with Oliver becomes apparent. Defiant and headstrong on the surface\, the audience begins to see that her adamancy of being completely unique and independent really stems from her desire to be loved and accepted.\nNarrator – The narrator of the story. They guide us through our entire show of Puffy-ness. Hopefully a British accent. Must have comedic skills and be a great storyteller.\nErnie Mac – loud and proud. Pretty sure he’s the best. (A Very Tall Man\, Seamus\, A Certain Potions Teacher\, Professor Turban\, Ghost History Teacher\, Professor Locky\, Mr. Nick\, Sal\, Second Headmaster\, Real Mr. Moody) \nHannah – Very\, very shy. (First Headmaster\, Professor McG\, Professor Sproutty\, Xavia Jones\, Professor Lanny\, Runes Teach\, Ms. Babble) \nJ. Finch Fletchley – Boyish and fun. (Uncle Dave\, Goyle\, A Far Friar\, Clumsy Longbottom\, Hermeoone # 3\, Viktor\, Mr. Bagman\, Zach Smith) \nLeanne – Is either a genius or really dumb… She has the biggest heart. (Ginny\, Helga\, Frenchy) \nSally Perks – Nice and later enjoys attracting attention.  (Hermeoone\, Blondo Malfoy\, Rowena\, Rita Scooter\, Bippy) \nSusie Bones – Gloomy. (Harry\, Colin\, Hermeoone # 2\, Ric Gryff\, Myrtle) \nCedric and Mr. Voldy – basically the best guy ever and the most evil \n\nActors will be asked to read from sides during the auditions. \nPlease be prepared to show off your best (or merely okay) British accents! Wayne\, Oliver\, and Megan have American accents. Everyone else should have some version of an English one.  \n  \nScenes  (click title to download) \n\nMeeting the Puffs\nTrio\nClasses\nCedric & Wayne\nThe Dark Lord\n\n  \nMonologues \nMegan Jones – I never wanted to be a Puff. Every member of my family? Puffs. We’re like THE Puff family. But I’ve always known that I was different. There’s nothing even special about Puffs. Loyalty? Being really nice? A bunch of lame\, awful failures doomed to be stupid walking personality-less nobodies that no one will ever care about ever? Ugh. My mom was a Puff. But she was different. She became something bigger. She made the name Jones finally mean something other than a bunch of … Puffs. I thought … I knew … I would be different too. But … after all my hard work to make myself not a Puff\, what do you know? The hat puts me with the Puffs. I did everything. I mean\, I even changed my accent just so I wouldn’t sound like my Puff family.  \nLeanne – No! I don’t want to leave. Why is everyone always so down on us? I won’t stand for it anymore! And I won’t sit for it either. And I also won’t stand on one leg because I can’t. Watch. Anyways. Look at your hand! You have a wand! Unless you looked at your other hand. Look at yourselves! Hannah. You used to be so awkward. And you still are\, but we don’t mind anymore! Who’s that? It’s Ernie Mac. And he is basically the best. And Sally. Remember the time you did that thing?! It was amazing! Susie! We all thought you’d be dead by now. But look at you\, standing there\, alive. Wayne. You give the best hugs. Megan! You give better hugs than you think you do. And J. Finch. He’s imaginary\, AND HE CAN DO MAGIC! We all can. We’re wizards. So\, sure. It would be easy to leave. But wouldn’t it be wrong? We should do what’s right. Like Cedric. I’m a Puff and I’m staying\, because if we don’t fight now we may never find out how that hat talks!  \nWayne Hopkins – Question. Hypothetical. What if I don’t have enough of a personality for the magic talking hat to sort me? Like…how much authority does this hat really have? Never mind. This place is crazy huh? I never thought I’d go to school in a castle. Pretty cool. I’ve never really liked school. People were mean. To me. I’m talking too much. You probably have all your own nervous thoughts going on … can I tell you something? I think I might be … special? I watch a lot of movies and read lots of books\, and it’s like; a normal boy finds out he actually has amazing abilities and is swept away to a new\, magical world? Does that sound familiar? Because that is now my ACTUAL life. And THAT kid\, through some incredible circumstances always becomes like the most important person. Like in the whole world. A sort of … Chosen One. AHH! Magic is real\, and this orphaned boy wizard is ready for seven years of amazing adventures!  \nMister Voldy – So. Since we’re on the verge of our victory to be remembered for all dark ages to come\, pats on the back by the way\, I’ve been working on some fun one liners to say when we vanquish out great teenage enemy\, Potter. Maybe I can try some out\, so you can see how fun thy are – eh hem. “Boy who lived? How about the boy who’s dead now? HA!” “Nice second scar – the one that’s on your whole body – since I killed you.” “Mother’s love your way out of that!” Or my favorite – “Loser says Avada what -” he says\, “What” – “KEDABRA!” – then he dies. What? The megaphone is still on? Really? Oh my. I am just having a day\, aren’t I? YAH! Harry!

Provoked by Iago\, a jealous Roderigo tells Brabantio of Othello’s secret affair and marriage to his daughter Desdemona. Othello is brought before the Duke\, where he explains how he wooed Desdemona\, and she is brought to the chamber to confirm her willingness to marry him. Othello is then sent to defend Cyprus against the Turks. He prepares to leave\, entrusting Desdemona to his ensign\, Iago. Iago tells Roderigo that he will obtain Desdemona for him\, and persuades him to come to Cyprus\, along with his money. Iago reflects on his hatred for Othello\, and plots a way of destroying him. \n  \nCast of Characters: \n\nOthello: The greatest army general in Venice. He is intelligent\, courageous\, and honorable. His marriage to beautiful Desdemona\, the daughter of a prominent Venetian\, provokes racial slurs against him. But he carries on with nobility and dignity as he leads an army against Turks on Cyprus. His dedication to duty is eclipsed only by his dedication to Desdemona\, who follows him to Cyprus. So passionately does he love her that he cannot endure the thought of another man even looking at her. And therein lies his Achilles’ heel\, jealousy.\nIago: Military officer who schemes against Othello because the Moor did not promote him. He is evil through and through\, taking great pleasure in bringing down the great Othello.\nDesdemona: Daughter of Brabantio\, wife of Othello\, and victim of Iago’s machinations and Othello’s jealousy. She is the noblest and most unselfish character in the play.\nMichael Cassio: Othello’s lieutenant\, who is manipulated by Iago. Cassio is a hinge on which the play turns. On the one hand\, it is his promotion that arouses Iago’s jealously. On the other\, it is his alleged (but nonexistent) love affair with Desdemona that arouses Othello’s jealousy.\nDuke of Venice: Ruler who finds in favor of Othello when Desdemona’s father attacks Othello’s character.\nBrabantio: Senator and father of Desdemona. A bigot whose racism is inflamed by Iago\, he despises Othello.  First Senator\, Second Senator\nGratiano: Brabantio’s brother.  Lodovico: Brabantio’s kinsman\, who bears a message from the duke recalling Othello to Venice.\nRoderigo: Venetian gentleman and former suitor of Desdemona. He is manipulated by Iago.\nMontano: Othello’s predecessor in the government of Cyprus.\nClown: Servant to Othello.\nEmilia: Wife of Iago. She is blind to his evil until she discovers that it was he who plotted against Othello and Desdemona.\nBianca: Cassio’s mistress.\nMinor Characters: Sailor\, messenger\, herald\, officers\, gentlemen\, musicians\, attendants.\n\nAudition Materials – Othello \nAuditions will be a mix of the one monologue (see link below for character monologues) and a scene with 2 or 3 characters which will be cold read. \nhttps://www.backstage.com/monologues/?min_age=0&max_age=100&page=1&order_by=asc&play_name=Othello&fbclid=IwAR3hUHTLcH5qW4T8cPFymAi9bBxK36QxWZaQWA-rolNC0lfCHqEh-hVUml4

Please submit your audition video to Director\, Amanda Castro-Conroy\, and Choreographer\, Bong Dizon\, at CharlieBrown@whatconj.org  \n  \nCharacters: Although the genders and ages for the characters are already assigned by the creator\, they are not fixed for our concept for the actors in our show. Charlie Brown’s director would like to keep all possibilities open and is looking to see what you bring to the characters. \n\nDance ensemble: Looking for a strong dancers to fill in background vocals and to perform the large dance numbers.\nSnoopy:  A loyal\, imaginative\, and good-natured beagle who is prone to imagining fantasy lives\, including being an author\, a college student known as “Joe Cool”\, an attorney\, and a World War I flying ace. Looking for strong vocalist and a great showman to portray this classic character.\nCharlie Brown: Good ol’ Charlie Brown is loyal\, determined\, and just a bit wishy-washy. He’s a true friend\, a dedicated baseball manager\, and very responsible when it comes to taking care of his dog\, . Charlie Brown never gives up\, even when he probably should.\nLucy Van Pelt: Though she’s often dismissed as simply bossy or crabby\, there’s more to Lucy than strong opinions. She dispenses sound advice for just five cents and looks out for her brothers\,  and Rerun. She’s confident\, strong\, and positive she’ll make a great president or queen one day.\nLinus Van Pelt: Thoughtful and respectful\, Linus is often the voice of reason among his peers. He is a deep thinker and a student of philosophy. Despite his run-ins with cantankerous Lucy\, and the fact no one understands why he carries a security blanket\, Linus remains delightfully hopeful.\nLinus’s Blanket: Looking for a strong dancer to perform alongside Linus during the duration of the show. Looking to find someone who is experienced in movement and dance and to work alongside our choreographer to make this beloved object a character of its own. Will potentially have to fill in background vocals.\nSchroeder: A moody musical genius\, Schroeder has been playing the piano since before he could walk. He also enjoys baseball and being with friends\, but he’s never happier than when playing a Beethoven piece—even if the black keys of his piano are just painted on.\nSally Brown: A highly articulate\, charismatic\, lovable\, sometimes eccentric and argumentative younger sister to Charlie Brown. Despite being portrayed as innocent and adorable\, she is noticeably intelligent for her age. She is absurdly intense\, balancing angst with innocence\, sweet but a skeptic.\n\nQuestions: Contact charliebrown@whatconj.org \n  \n* Stage and technical crew\, set building\, and other volunteers are also needed for this production!
