The Countess Olivia\, a woman with her own household\, attracts Duke (or Count) Orsino. Two other would-be suitors are her pretentious steward\, Malvolio\, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek. \nOnto this scene arrive the twins Viola and Sebastian; caught in a shipwreck\, each thinks the other has drowned. Viola disguises herself as a male page and enters Orsino’s service. Orsino sends her as his envoy to Olivia—only to have Olivia fall in love with the messenger. The play complicates\, then wonderfully untangles\, these relationships. \nCast of Characters: \n\nViola: A young woman of aristocratic birth\, and the play’s protagonist. Washed up on the shore of Illyria when her ship is wrecked in a storm\, Viola decides to make her own way in the world. She disguises herself as a young man\, calling herself “Cesario\,” and becomes a page to Duke Orsino. She ends up falling in love with Orsino—even as Olivia\, the woman Orsino is courting\, falls in love with Cesario. Thus\, Viola finds that her clever disguise has entrapped her: she cannot tell Orsino that she loves him\, and she cannot tell Olivia why she\, as Cesario\, cannot love her. Her poignant plight is the central conflict in the play.\nOrsino: A powerful nobleman in the country of Illyria. Orsino is lovesick for the beautiful Lady Olivia\, but becomes more and more fond of his handsome new page boy\, Cesario\, who is actually a woman—Viola. Orsino is a vehicle through which the play explores the absurdity of love: a supreme egotist\, Orsino mopes around complaining how heartsick he is over Olivia\, when it is clear that he is chiefly in love with the idea of being in love and enjoys making a spectacle of himself. His attraction to the ostensibly male Cesario injects sexual ambiguity into his character.\nOlivia: A wealthy\, beautiful\, and noble Illyrian lady\, Olivia is courted by Orsino and Sir Andrew Aguecheek\, but to each of them she insists that she is in mourning for her brother\, who has recently died\, and will not marry for seven years. She and Orsino are similar characters in that each seems to enjoy wallowing in his or her own misery. Viola’s arrival in the masculine guise of Cesario enables Olivia to break free of her self-indulgent melancholy. Olivia seems to have no difficulty transferring her affections from one love interest to the next\, however\, suggesting that her romantic feelings—like most emotions in the play—do not run deep.\nSebastian: Viola’s lost twin brother. When he arrives in Illyria\, traveling with Antonio\, his close friend and protector\, Sebastian discovers that many people think that they know him. Furthermore\, the beautiful Lady Olivia\, whom he has never met\, wants to marry him. Sebastian is not as well rounded a character as his sister. He seems to exist to take on the role that Viola fills while disguised as Cesario—namely\, the mate for Olivia.\nMalvolio: The straitlaced steward—or head servant—in the household of Lady Olivia. Malvolio is very efficient but also very self-righteous\, and he has a poor opinion of drinking\, singing\, and fun. His priggishness and haughty attitude earn him the enmity of Sir Toby\, Sir Andrew\, and Maria\, who play a cruel trick on him\, making him believe that Olivia is in love with him. In his fantasies about marrying his mistress\, he reveals a powerful ambition to rise above his social class.\nFeste: The clown\, or fool\, of Olivia’s household\, Feste moves between Olivia’s and Orsino’s homes. He earns his living by making pointed jokes\, singing old songs\, being generally witty\, and offering good advice cloaked under a layer of foolishness. In spite of being a professional fool\, Feste often seems the wisest character in the play.\nSir Toby: Olivia’s uncle. Olivia lets Sir Toby Belch live with her\, but she does not approve of his rowdy behavior\, practical jokes\, heavy drinking\, late-night carousing\, or friends (specifically the idiotic Sir Andrew). Sir Toby also earns the ire of Malvolio. But Sir Toby has an ally\, and eventually a mate\, in Olivia’s sharp-witted waiting-gentlewoman\, Maria. Together they bring about the triumph of chaotic spirit\, which Sir Toby embodies\, and the ruin of the controlling\, self-righteous Malvolio.\nMaria Olivia’s clever\, daring young waiting-gentlewoman. Maria is remarkably similar to her antagonist\, Malvolio\, who harbors aspirations of rising in the world through marriage. But Maria succeeds where Malvolio fails—perhaps because she is a woman\, but\, more likely\, because she is more in tune than Malvolio with the anarchic\, topsy-turvy spirit that animates the play.\nSir Andrew Aguecheek: A friend of Sir Toby’s. Sir Andrew Aguecheek attempts to court Olivia\, but he doesn’t stand a chance. He thinks that he is witty\, brave\, young\, and good at languages and dancing\, but he is actually an idiot.\nAntonio: A man who rescues Sebastian after his shipwreck. Antonio has become very fond of Sebastian\, caring for him\, accompanying him to Illyria\, and furnishing him with money—all because of a love so strong that it seems to be romantic in nature. Antonio’s attraction to Sebastian\, however\, never bears fruit. Despite the ambiguous and shifting gender roles in the play\, Twelfth Night remains a romantic comedy in which the characters are destined for marriage. In such a world\, homoerotic attraction cannot be fulfilled.\nSea Captain: A fried of Viola.\nLords attending on Orsino\nLords\, attendants\, musicians and officers \n\nTwelfth Night Audition Materials \nSide 1: Orsino\, Curio\, Valentine \nSide 2: Sir Toby\, Maria\, Sir Andrew \nSide 3: Orsino\, Viola \nSide 4: Malvolio\, Olivia\, Viola \nSide 5: Victoria\, Antonio \nSide 6: Sir Andrew\, Sir Toby\, Feste\, Malvolio \nSide 7: Olivia\, Malvolio

Fifteen years before the events of the play\, Prospero was the duke of Milan. His brother\, Antonio\, in concert with Alonso\, king of Naples\, usurped him\, forcing him to flee in a boat with his daughter. The honest lady Gonzala aided Prospero in his escape. Prospero has spent his fifteen years on the island refining the magic that gives him the power he needs to punish and forgive his enemies.\nMiranda: 20’s The daughter of Prospero\, Miranda was brought to the island at an early age and has never seen any men other than her father and Caliban\, though she dimly remembers being cared for by female servants as an infant. Because she has been sealed off from the world for so long\, Miranda’s perceptions of other people tend to be naïve and non-judgmental. She is compassionate\, generous\, and loyal to her father. Will be required to learn dance choreography\nCaliban: 30’s to 40’s\, Another of Prospero’s servants. Caliban\, the son of the now-deceased witch Sycorax\, acquainted Prospero with the island when Prospero arrived. Caliban believes that the island rightfully belongs to him and has been stolen by Prospero. His speech and behavior is sometimes coarse and brutal\, as in his drunken scenes with Stephano and Trinculo (II.ii\, IV.i)\, and sometimes eloquent and sensitive\, as in his rebukes of Prospero in Act I\, scene ii\, and in his description of the eerie beauty of the island in Act III\, scene ii.\nFerdinand: 20’s\, Son and heir of Alonso. Ferdinand seems in some ways to be as pure and naïve as Miranda. He falls in love with her upon first sight and happily submits to servitude in order to win her father’s approval. Will be required to learn dance choreography\nAriel: 20’s to 30’s Prospero’s spirit helper. Rescued by Prospero from a long imprisonment at the hands of the witch Sycorax\, Ariel is Prospero’s servant until Prospero decides to release him. He is mischievous and ubiquitous\, able to traverse the length of the island in an instant and to change shapes at will. He carries out virtually every task that Prospero needs accomplished in the play. Note\, for this production the actor playing Ariel must be able to play a musical instrument. Will also be required to sing and learn dance choreography.\nAlonso: 40’s to 50’s King of Naples and father of Ferdinand. Alonso aided Antonio in unseating Prospero as Duke of Milan fifteen years before. As he appears in the play\, however\, he is acutely aware of the consequences of all his actions. He blames his decision to marry his daughter to the Prince of Tunis on the apparent death of his son. In addition\, after the magical banquet\, he regrets his role in the usurping of Prospero.\nAntonio: 50’s\, Prospero’s brother. Antonio quickly demonstrates that he is power-hungry and foolish. In Act II\, scene i\, he persuades Sebastian to kill the sleeping Alonso. He then goes along with Sebastian’s absurd story about fending off lions when Gonzalo wakes up and catches Antonio and Sebastian with their swords drawn.\nSabrina: Late 30’s to 40’s\, Alonso’s sister. Like Antonio\, she is both aggressive and cowardly. she is easily persuaded to kill her brother in Act II\, scene i\, and she initiates the ridiculous story about lions when Gonzala catches her with her sword drawn.\nGonzala: Late 30’s to 40’s An\, honest lady\, Gonzala helped Prospero and Miranda to escape after Antonio usurped Prospero’s title. Gonzala’s speeches provide an important commentary on the events of the play\, as she remarks on the beauty of the island when the stranded party first lands\, then on the desperation of Alonso after the magic banquet\, and on the miracle of the reconciliation in Act V\, scene i. Note\, this actor will also play Iris the fairy. Will be required to sing and learn dance choreography.\nStephanie: Late 30’s to 40’s\, Stephanie\, a drunken butler. Provides comedic relief for the play along with Trinculo. Hates her position in life. Uses Caliban and treats him as a servant throughout their scenes in the show. Actor playing Stephanie will also play the Master of the ship and Juno the Fairy. Must be able to sing and learn dance choreography.\nTrinculo:  Late 20’s to 30’s\, A jester and bit a scaredy cat. When he see’s Caliban for the first time\, he tries to think of a way to make money off of him. Actor Playing Trinculo will also play the boatswain and Ceres the fairy. Must be able to sing and learn dance choreography.\n\n  \nThe Tempest Audition Materials \nSide 1: Ariel\, Prospero \nSide 2: Ferdinand\, Ariel\, Prospero\, Miranda \nSide 3: Caliban \nSide 4: Stephanie\, Caliban\, Trinculo \nSide 5: Gonzalo\, Alonso\, Sabrina\, Antonio\, Prospero \n  \nWest Hudson Arts & Theater Company values diversity and inclusion in casting\, and in all other areas of the organization. \n
